App Design

Your app is a tool people rely on – often in short, high-intent moments – which means it has to be clear, fast, and built around real behaviour. A great app is more than a set of screens. At Bluebrick Studios, we design and develop mobile apps that balance user experience with technical robustness, helping businesses deliver products and services through iOS and Android in a way that feels effortless for the people using them.

This page introduces our app design capability end-to-end. You’ll find an overview of how we approach app UX and UI, how we build for iOS and Android (native or cross-platform where appropriate), and how we support apps after launch with updates, improvements and platform compatibility. We’ll also link to our platform pages for iOS and Android, plus dedicated pages diving deep into App User Experience, App User Interface Design, and App Support and Maintenance.

Summary

App design that starts with the problem

Apps succeed when they solve something specific and do it well. Before we think about features, we focus on the problem: who the app is for, what they need to achieve, and what success looks like for your business. That early clarity shapes everything – user flows, navigation patterns, screen hierarchy, and the technical decisions that determine how the app will perform in the real world.

For some projects, the goal is a new customer-facing product. For others, it’s operational efficiency: reducing manual work, improving data capture, or giving teams a more reliable way to access systems on the go. Either way, we design apps to be purposeful – with a clear set of user journeys and a design direction you can build on.

UX and UI: clarity, consistency, and speed

Mobile UX is different to web. Screen space is limited, attention is short, and user expectations are high. We design mobile experiences that are intuitive from the first tap: clear navigation, predictable patterns, and flows that help users complete tasks quickly.

Our app design process typically includes user journey mapping, wireframes, interactive prototyping and usability testing where it adds value. Then we translate the UX into UI – a visual system that reflects your brand, supports accessibility, and creates a consistent feel across the app. We use collaborative tools like Figma so design work stays transparent and easy to review, and so development handover is clean and unambiguous.

If you want to go deeper, our dedicated pages on App User Experience and App User Interface Design break this down in more detail.

Building for iOS and Android

We’ve spent over a decade designing and building apps across iOS and Android. Depending on your requirements, we can deliver:

Native builds, where the best performance and platform-specific behaviour are critical, using Swift/Objective-C for iOS and Kotlin/Java for Android.

Cross-platform builds, where it makes sense to share a single codebase across iOS and Android, typically using React Native, while still delivering a near-native experience.

The right choice depends on your needs: performance, budget, release timelines, device features, and long-term roadmap. We’ll help you choose a route that’s realistic and sustainable, not just technically possible.

We also design and develop the services around the app – APIs, middleware, data synchronisation and system integrations – so your app connects reliably to whatever it needs to connect to, whether that’s internal tools, third-party platforms or real-time data sources.

Our platform pages for iOS and Android cover these build approaches in more detail.

Launch, updates, and ongoing improvement

App design doesn’t end at launch. Mobile platforms update frequently, devices change, and user expectations move quickly. To keep an app healthy, you need a plan for compatibility, performance, and iterative improvement.

We support app clients by managing updates, addressing bugs quickly, improving flows based on analytics and user feedback, and ensuring the app continues to work smoothly as iOS and Android evolve. We don’t host apps in-house, but we do manage delivery processes and work alongside your wider team where needed – keeping releases controlled, predictable, and low risk.

Our App Support and Maintenance page goes deeper into how that ongoing partnership works.

Our work

Airmodo – native iOS and Android app with real-time risk and data integration

We delivered native iOS and Android applications to enable the sale of drone insurance policies, including annual and hourly location-based policies. The app integrated with a UK-based airspace data provider and incorporated real-time NOTAM data to assess risk within a one-mile radius of a proposed flight location, dynamically adjusting premiums. We continue to support the apps to maintain compatibility with new iOS and Android releases and to ensure security remains strong.

Steadberry – mobile-first field workflows and platform evolution

We helped Steadberry modernise operational workflows by replacing paper-based surveys with a mobile solution, later evolving this into a progressive web app for greater flexibility. While the delivery approach differed from a native app, the principles are the same: usability in real-world conditions, fast capture, and ongoing iteration based on operational needs.
